
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
As part of FernLeaf's rich learning environment we offer a variety of after school activities and sports taught by the FernLeaf team or outside organizations with additional expertise. These offerings change throughout the year and may be available after the initial enrollment period by communication with the instructor. The programs showing below are for our most recent session.
Lower school is our elementary students in grades K-4th and upper school comprises 5th grades through high school. Click the links below to see the offerings for those specific grade levels.

Betsy Dixon of Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet will teach these dance classes. Classes will include fun music and creative movement, and focus on beginning ballet, jazz and modern techniques. No special shoes or equipment required. Students should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing for freedom of movement. At the end of the session, students will show off what they have learned in a mini recital in the classroom.
Betsy has been teaching dance classes for 20 years, 15 of them with Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet. She has taught ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance to ages 3 through 63. She choreographed an award-winning Bollywood jazz piece for Hendersonville Ballet to take to the Encore dance competition and Furman College. Currently she is choreographing and costuming for Hendersonville Ballet’s Nutcracker and Spring Performance.

Did you know FernLeaf has a kiln? In our fall ceramics class students will learn the basics of clay, shaping and how to use ceramics tools. We will make 10 distinct projects. This class includes all tools and materials, clay, and glazes.
Fairy Garden Club

We will work together to create garden playscapes centered on the theme of fairies and their woodland friends. Students will plan a miniature landscape with real plants and natural construction materials. Next we will learn to make permanent mini structures for the fairies to live in. And before the fairies can move in we will learn to forage from nature useful items for the fairies to use while living in our garden. These playscapes will be available for students to play with when we are done. Lastly, students will take all these skills and build their own micro landscape in an indoor pot to take home.

Calling all Pokémon Trainers at FernLeaf!
Join the fun as we draw favorite characters, invent brand-new creatures, and design custom cards. Bring your extra cards to trade, and learn how to actually play the game. Every club member will receive a beginner deck to practice and play with—no experience needed. Whether you're just starting out or already a master, there’s something for everyone. Envision - Vision Boards & Goal Setting

With each hike, children will search for fascinating plants and animals, learning about the wonders of the natural world while having a blast with friends. Canoeing - French Broad Trailblazers Club

Come expand your canoeing skills and explore the French Broad Watershed. With headwaters deep in Pisgah National Forest, the French Broad River flows northwest 218 miles through NC & TN before joining the Tennessee River. Offering ample recreation opportunities ranging from a paddle camping trail, to whitewater boating, to fishing for everything from 4 inch native Brook Trout to 6 ft sturgeon, the French Broad offers something for everyone. FernLeaf French Broad Trailblazers Club hopes to familiarize students with this wonderful river and send them off with the skills to continue exploring the river for years to come. Our first session will be a skill building course at Lake Julian. Every session after that will be an exploration of a different section of the French Broad River and its tributaries.
E Sports

Join us as we partner with VESL to participate in statewide Esports and STEM competitions for NC high school students each semester. Many of the games in which students compete during the regular season are already being played at home and all the games are open to new players. Matches are played from home, at school, or even on the road at the state final in Greensboro. Regular season, one off tournaments, and STEM competitions offer match live streaming, specialized coaching, and prizes! Space is limited and team size depends on the specific game or activity. Science Explorers Club

The Science Explorers Club is an opportunity for students to explore and learn about concepts in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Students will work on mini projects in the beginning weeks then end with a culminating project that will tie the different scientific disciplines together. On the final day of the club, students will present their projects to parents in a project gallery-style event.

Put on your garden gloves and help care for our beautiful bird friendly garden! This garden was planted by 6th grade in 2025 as part of their Birds of NC Project, and we need your help to keep it growing. Do you love disc golf? Have you seen it before and wondered how to start playing? Well here is your chance to join the FernLeaf Middle School Disc Golf team. This fall the FernLeaf Disc Golf team will compete in the WNC Middle School league over a period of 8 weeks at 4 different courses. Each week we will be learning the essential skills to have fun and become better disc golfers. The first week at each course will focus on throwing the disc, shot choices, basic rules, putting and a chance to practice playing the course. The second week at each course will be tournament day to test your skills against other middle school disc golfers in WNC. All equipment will be provided if needed.

Are you interested in how scientists conduct field work to collect data for wildlife? Do you love turtles and hiking off trail through the woods? Come join us as we work to collect data for the NC Box Turtle Connect Project. Our beautiful 93 acre Wilderness campus will be our study site as we trek through the woods in search of box turtles. During our time we will learn about box turtles, find out about their population, collect data for our state wide project on the turtles we locate, & learn how we can be good stewards for our local turtle populations.
