As part of FernLeaf's rich learning environment we offer a variety of after school activities and sports taught by the FernLeaf team or outside organizations with additional expertise. These offerings change throughout the year and may be available after the initial enrollment period by communication with the instructor. The programs showing below are for our most recent session.
Creek Campus is grades K-4th and Wilderness Campus is 5th grades through High School. Click the campus below to see the offerings for those specific grade levels.

Music Exploration

Animal Art Scouts is the perfect creative haven for young animal enthusiasts and budding artists! Each week, our Animal Art Scouts embark on exciting artistic adventures to learn about different animals, all while expressing their love for wildlife through various art forms, such as painting, drawing, and sculpting. Some weeks, a live animal friend may even pay us a visit!

Intro to Digital Art

In Intro to Digital Art, students will use digital drawing programs to explore art in several bold new directions. Along the way, they'll dabble in pixel art, paint digitally, create animations, edit photos, and even concoct their own memes.
Spanish Club

This co-ed spanish club is open to all levels of experience. Students will learn the fundamentals of the spanish language in a fun and interactive way with games, sports, scavenger hunts, videos, songs and more. The primary focus will be on conversational spanish within emphasis on practical travel Spanish. We will sample some Latin American comida (food) on occasion. It will be a combination of indoor and outdoor activities depending on the weather. All activities will take place at the FernLeaf Creek Campus.

This co-ed basketball club is open to all levels of experience. Students will learn the fundamentals of the sport while improving teamwork, coordination, character-building and endurance. Betsy Dixon of Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet is offering this dance class. Classes include fun music and creative movement, and focus on beginning ballet, jazz and modern techniques. No special shoes or equipment required. Students should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing for freedom of movement. At the end of the session, students will show off what they have learned in a mini recital in the classroom.
Betsy has been teaching dance classes for 20 years, 15 of them with Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet. She has taught ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance to ages 3 through 63. She choreographed an award-winning Bollywood jazz piece for Hendersonville Ballet to take to the Encore dance competition at Furman College. Currently she is choreographing and costuming for Hendersonville Ballet’s Nutcracker and Spring Performance.

Winter Musical

In this after school class, children will learn musical theater singing, dancing, and acting skills. Explore costumes, props, and experience what it takes to put on a show. Students will rehearse and perform choreographed dances, songs, and ensemble scenes from The Wizard of Oz to perform for family and friends as a part of the FernLeaf winter musical. No audition or experience required. Presented by Playground Stage and led by teaching artist Morgan Piner. Tuition includes use of costumes and family tickets to the final performance.
REHEARSALS: Thursdays, 11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 1/4, 1/11, 1/18, and 1/25, 3:00-4:00pm. Dress rehearsals, Monday-Thursday, 1/29-2/1, 3-5 pm.

Our goal will be to create and display our final projects and to have fun together making art!

Ladies in the Lab is an after school program where students are empowered and learn about women professionals and their contributions in the science world. During our time together we will meet local women scientists and learn about their profession, what it took to get where they are today, and what type of science they participate in. Students will get to ask questions and meet with local professionals. Then the following week we will conduct a lab that aligns with similar science that we just learned about. In addition to our learning about women in the field of science, our goal of Ladies in the Lab is to also build a network of students within our school community that have similar interests in hopes of mentoring and supporting one another. We are encouraging 9th and 10th grade students to join to help mentor some of our middle grades students through our labs. Through learning and networking we can empower more women to enter in the science professions.

This winter, work with ELA teacher Zoe Hauser, a self-published author, to hone your writing skills! Bring your short stories, novels, or poems. We'll work on all aspects of the writing process, including plot development, characterization, conflict, scene building, descriptive language, dialogue, voice, and style. Most importantly, we'll practice deepening your story's underlying emotional conflict -- the current that pulls your readers along and ties your narrative together.

The Creative Writing Workshop provides a nurturing place for creative and curious writers of any genre to share what you are most excited about in your writing world. This club is meant to be a space where students can simply let go of the structured school day and let your creativity run loose. Activities will include periods of silent writing or brainstorming, mini-lessons on craft, opportunities to read or share work in community, and discussions of writing-related topics. The Creative Writing Club is open to any high school student with an interest in writing creatively, regardless of prior experience. Feel free to bring your creative works in progress or a blank notebook and a willingness to dig into your imagination!
Strength & Conditioning

This program is designed to show you how cool it is to be strong. After all, a life that includes regular, challenging exercise is critical for physical, mental and emotional health. From your athletic pursuits - be they on the trail or on a dance floor - to your relationships with friends and family, from your academic goals this year to your long-term aspirations, strength and conditioning practices are important tools to know how to use. We will spend six hour-long sessions at Summit CrossFit South where certified coaches there will instruct us on strength and conditioning exercises including the safe and appropriate use of free weights and equipment. Following the instruction period, the coaches will lead us through a focused exercise program to get our heart rates up and bodies moving. The program is open to any 8th-10th grader regardless of experience as long as students are medically able and willing to participate in high intensity, regular exercise. For sessions at the gym, students will need to be picked up by 4:30 at Summit CrossFit South.

Have you ever been interested in joining a dance performance group - than Dance Club is the place to start. There will be an emphasis on team-oriented dance, however, each 9th-10th grade participant has the opportunity to learn new dance skills in the realms of jazz, contemporary, and hip hop styles of dance, improve flexibility and strength, grow as an artist with expression through movement, learn choreographed dance routines, participate in a community performance at the end of the session.

FernLeaf Musical Theater, in collaboration with Playground Stage, presents The Wizard of Oz. In this class, students will develop skills in acting, singing, dancing, and aspects of technical theater (costumes, sets, props, etc.) while rehearsing a staged, choreographed musical production of The Wizard of Oz. Directed and choreographed by Morgan Piner, with production and musical direction by Eric Scheider, the show will conclude with final performances for family and friends. Tuition includes use of costumes and family tickets to the final performance.
