AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

As part of FernLeaf's rich learning environment we offer a variety of after school activities and sports taught by the FernLeaf team or outside organizations with additional expertise. These offerings change throughout the year and may be available after the initial enrollment period by communication with the instructor. The programs showing below are for our most recent session.

Creek Campus is grades K-4th and Wilderness Campus is 5th grades through High School. Click the campus below to see the offerings for those specific grade levels.

Come expand your canoeing skills and explore the French Broad Watershed.  With headwaters deep in Pisgah National Forest, the French Broad River flows northwest 218 miles through NC & TN before joining the Tennessee River. Offering ample recreation opportunities ranging from a paddle camping trail, to whitewater boating, to fishing for everything from 4 inch native Brook Trout to 6 ft sturgeon, the French Broad offers something for everyone. FernLeaf French Broad Trailblazers Club hopes to familiarize students with this wonderful river and send them off with the skills to continue exploring the river for years to come.  Our first session will be a skill building course at Lake Julian. Every session after that will be an exploration of a different section of the French Broad River and its tributaries.  Sections will be chosen based on the skill level of the group.

Advanced Backpacking

Advanced backpacking is for students with some backpacking experience.  Students will meet once to plan the route and menu for the trip and work on group dynamics. Then they will gather for a 2 night backpacking trip into Pisgah National Forest led by a Wilderness First Responder certified FernLeaf teacher.

Do you love disc golf? Have you seen it before and wondered how to start playing? Well here is your chance to join the FernLeaf Middle School Disc Golf team. This fall the FernLeaf Disc Golf team will compete in the WNC Middle School league over a period of 8 weeks at 4 different courses.  Each week we will be learning the essential skills to have fun and become better disc golfers. The first week at each course will focus on throwing the disc, shot choices, basic rules, putting and a chance to practice playing the course. The second week at each course will be tournament day to test your skills against other middle school disc golfers in WNC. All equipment will be provided if needed.

Esports are coming to FernLeaf! Join us as we partner with VESL to participate in statewide Esports and STEM competitions for North Carolina high school students each semester. Many of the games in which students compete during the regular season are already being played at home and all the games are open to new players. Matches are played from home, at school, or even on the road at the state final in Greensboro. Regular season, one off tournaments, and STEM competitions offer match live streaming, specialized coaching, and prizes! Space is limited and team size depends on the specific game or activity. FernLeaf Golf Club is returning!  Fall Golf Club will be 10 weeks - 1 week of instruction, 8 weeks at the driving range, and we will cap it all off with a round of golf at Orchard Trace Golf Club, an 18 hole, par 3 course in Hendersonville. No equipment or experience is required.  If you have any golf equipment lying around that is not being used anymore, consider donating them to our club.

Do you have a student interested in learning about Japan? Either the language or the culture? Then they may be interested in Bukatsu, a language and culture club that studies Japan. Topics include history, cultural studies, common foods, and other details. There will also be opportunities for students to practice language skills and develop a deeper understanding of Japan. This club will involve student led projects, optional homework, and other academic activities. Students are expected to come to develop skills within their interest offered by the club.

Come learn how to play this simple 4-stringed instrument! We will cover the basics of chords and strumming, learning some of our favorite songs. In the later weeks, we will dive into fingerstyle, a more complex way of playing the instrument. All levels are welcome. Instruments will be provided.

Nicole Conrad, a NC licensed cosmetology instructor, and mom to a 6th grader at Fernleaf will be teaching a Make Up Arts club afterschool this fall.  She teaches hair, makeup, nails and more at local community colleges in western North Carolina and has 28 years of experience in the cosmetology field. She teaches all levels of cosmetology classes from beginner to advanced.  The afterschool program at FernLeaf will include: Everything makeup - history, tools, basics, old age simulation, special effects, airbrush and avant garde!  Each student will receive a kit that includes everything they need for the class.

Each week, young learners will embark on a musical journey to a different part of the globe, discovering traditional instruments, rhythms, and songs from various countries and regions. Through hands-on activities, engaging storytelling, and interactive performances, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the world's musical heritage while developing their own musical skills. Our program fosters creativity, cultural awareness, and a love for music in a fun and supportive environment. Come make new friends and travel the world through music with Global Melodies!

Traveling Sketchbook Collective

In this club, students will create their own personal sketchbook and draw entries inspired by weekly challenges. After each session, we will trade sketchbooks with one another (and with various guest artists!!!) so that by the end of the club, each student will have a unique book filled with artwork made and inspired by our collective creativity.

Wilderness Survival Club will focus on outdoor skills. Every week we will learn new skills that include: map and compass reading, navigation, water purification, outdoor cooking, fire making, "Leave No Trace" practices, shelter building, wild edibles and more.  No experience necessary.  All activities will take place at the FernLeaf Creek Campus.

Betsy Dixon of Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet will offer two new classes at FernLeaf this fall. Classes will include fun music and creative movement, and focus on beginning ballet, jazz and modern techniques. No special shoes or equipment required. Students should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing for freedom of movement. At the end of the session, students will show off what they have learned in a mini recital in the classroom.

Betsy has been teaching dance classes for 20 years, 15 of them with Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet. She has taught ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance to ages 3 through 63. She choreographed an award-winning Bollywood jazz piece for Hendersonville Ballet to take to the Encore dance competition and Furman College.
