As part of FernLeaf's rich learning environment we offer a variety of after school activities and sports taught by the FernLeaf team or outside organizations with additional expertise. These offerings change throughout the year and may be available after the initial enrollment period by communication with the instructor. The programs showing below are for our most recent session.
Creek Campus is grades K-4th and Wilderness Campus is 5th grades through High School. Click the campus below to see the offerings for those specific grade levels.

Ukulele Club

Ukulele Club offers a fun and engaging environment where kids can learn to play the ukulele. This program is led by the lower grades music teacher, Clare, who has over a decade of experience teaching the instrument. In Intro to Digital Art, students will use digital drawing programs to explore art in several bold new directions. Along the way, they'll dabble in pixel art, paint digitally, create animations, edit photos, and even concoct their own memes.

Betsy Dixon of Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet will offer new classes at FernLeaf during the winter session. Classes will include fun music and creative movement, and focus on beginning ballet, jazz and modern techniques. No special shoes or equipment required. Students should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing for freedom of movement. At the end of the session, students will show off what they have learned in a mini recital in the classroom.
Betsy has been teaching dance classes for 20 years, 15 of them with Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet. She has taught ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance to ages 3 through 63. She choreographed an award-winning Bollywood jazz piece for Hendersonville Ballet to take to the Encore dance competition at Furman College. Currently she is choreographing and costuming for Hendersonville Ballet’s Nutcracker and Spring Performance.

Fishing Club

Fish on! Students will learn the fundamentals of fishing in this hands-on club. We will cover safety, casting, knot tying, fish identification, river reading, fishing regulations, campfire cooking and so much more. All classes will take place at FernLeaf Creek Campus. The club will be a combination of theory and practice with classroom activities, videos and casting practice (in the athletic field). Trout season opens April 1, at which point the club will shift focus to fishing in Cane Creek (on FernLeaf’s Creek Campus). Students will have the opportunity to catch a variety of fish including Rainbow, Brook and Brown Trout. Students will have the choice to keep legal fish (and take home for dinner) or catch, photograph and release. Students are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment if available. If unavailable, fishing equipment can be provided by FernLeaf. If we have good luck, we may even be able to cook our catch over a campfire!

Presented by Playground Stage. Students will learn all about teamwork as they work together with their classmates and a professional Teaching Artist to perform scenes and songs from a short musical. Each actor will receive their own part with lines and songs to learn. Class time will be used for rehearsal. A performance complete with costumes and props will take place on the final class day.

High School Disc Golf

High school disc golf is returning this year and will be open to 9th and 10th graders here at FernLeaf. Students on this team will be representing FernLeaf in the local Western North Carolina High School Disc Golf League (WNCHSDG) played at different courses in the area. Transportation will NOT be provided for this team. We will be playing in tournaments on Wednesdays that will be hosted by WNCHSDG. You can see more information on the league at WNCHSDG.com.

This is a working class, students will be able to pour through the instructor's sketchbooks but are encouraged to work on their own ideas/style/ and creative whimsies. Have you ever been interested in joining a dance performance group then Dance Club is the place to start. There will be an emphasis on team-oriented dance, however, each participant has the opportunity to learn new dance skills in the realms of jazz, contemporary, and hip hop styles of dance, improve flexibility and strength, grow as an artist with expression through movement, learn choreographed dance routines, and participate in a community performance at the end of the session.
