Tanya Prater

9th & 10th Grades Science Teacher

With almost 20 years of experience working in various educational environments, Tanya's passion for teaching can be traced back to a love of science and exploring the natural world as a child. She grew up on the East Coast where she got to spend time in several different states between grade school and grad school. Between those experiences and her travels to other countries, her passion for learning and sharing her knowledge with others developed into a love for education.

With her passion for science and education, Tanya started her career in 2003 teaching environmental education on the coast of South Carolina and in the Adirondack mountains in New York. Those experiences showed her the importance of hands-on and experiential learning. She brought those skills into the classroom, developing inquiry-based lessons and authentic projects. She also spent eight years as a guide and program director at a Montessori adolescent program where she developed a passion for project based learning.

Tanya is a graduate of College of Charleston, where she earned a degree in Marine Biology, and Antioch University, where she earned her master’s degree in Environmental Studies and Education. When Tanya is not busy with teaching, she can be found reading, running, or hiking and playing disc golf with her family.
