Laura Coffey
4th Grade Teacher
Laura grew up in a small town in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Early on she knew she wanted to
become a teacher. Her passion and curiosity for learning new things, desire to make a
difference, and eagerness to inspire others paved her path to teaching. Laura holds a
Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education (K-6) from Mercyhurst College. She is also a
graduate of North Carolina State University, where she holds a Master’s Degree in Middle
Grades Education: New Literacies and Global Learning (Go Pack!!).
Laura has taught in both public and private schools before joining the FernLeaf community. The
majority of her teaching experience has been in Wake County schools in Raleigh, North
Carolina. She has experience working with students in kindergarten, second, third, and fourth
grade. Laura also served as team leader and an instructional coach and she values
collaboration and building strong relationships with her colleagues, students, and families. Laura
is enthusiastic about helping her students develop a deep love of learning and discovering a
love of nature and the world around them. She aims to nurture each child’s individual interests
and encourage them to become critical thinkers who are prepared to thrive both academically
and socially.
Laura and her husband Matt have three kids; Kenzie, Addie, and Greyson. They also have two
cats and a dog. Their family moved to Asheville in 2023 because they have always loved the
North Carolina mountains, and they wanted to live closer to her husband's family. The outdoors
has always been a place of tranquility, connection, and enjoyment for them. Laura is thrilled to
begin her teaching career at FernLeaf and to position her students for lifelong joy and success.
When Laura isn’t teaching, you can find her spending time outdoors with her family, bike riding, or enjoying a good book.
